A class of their own

Cort Scheel TD

My main beat for this Fall is covering my hometown high school football team.

The Wilmington Wildcats have always been a dominant force in football and this season appear to be in a class of their own in 3A this season. Their coach Jeff Reents is in his 16th with winning percentage over .700 but no state title.

This photo is from their 56-7 victory on opening weekend over the Manteno Panthers. Cort Scheel caught a pass and it was paydirt from there. I think this photo symbolizes how good Wilmington is and their status in the IHSA this season.

I usually don’t like using flash. Actually, I hate it. But for this photo it worked out in creating the above effect, like he’s in the spotlight. Also, in a figurative sense, that nobody is going to catch. Literally, nobody did.
